The magic of recording studio songwriting

Recording studios have long been a hub for creative collaboration and innovation in the music industry. With access to top-notch equipment, experienced engineers, and a professional environment, many artists have penned some of their most iconic songs within these hallowed walls.

Here are some key aspects of recording studio songwriting:

  1. Inspiration: The right environment can spark new ideas. Studios often provide an atmosphere conducive to creativity, with state-of-the-art instruments, comfortable spaces, and a sense of possibility.
  2. Collaboration: Songwriting in a recording studio can be a collaborative process. Artists may work with producers, co-writers, or other musicians to bring their ideas to life.
  3. Experimentation: Studios offer the freedom to try new things, from unconventional instruments to innovative production techniques. This environment encourages artists to push boundaries and explore new sounds.
  4. Feedback: Engineers and producers can provide valuable feedback on song structure, melody, harmony, and arrangement. This input helps refine ideas and shape the final product.
  5. Tracking: Once a song is written and arranged, it's time to start tracking. This involves recording individual parts, such as vocals, guitars, drums, or bass, which are then layered to create the final mix.

Some famous songs that were born in recording studios include:

  • "Hey Jude" by The Beatles (Abbey Road Studios)
  • "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin (Headley Grange and Island Records)
  • "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen (Rockfield Manor Studios)
  • "Synchronicity II" by The Police (Le Studio, Morin-Heights)

To make the most of your recording studio songwriting experience:

  1. Prepare: Come with a clear idea of what you want to work on and some rough demos or lyrics.
  2. Be open-minded: Don't be afraid to try new things and explore different ideas.
  3. Communicate: Work closely with engineers, producers, and collaborators to ensure everyone is on the same page.
  4. Take breaks: Songwriting can be mentally demanding; take time to rest your mind and come back to your work refreshed.
  5. Have fun: Remember why you started making music in the first place – to express yourself creatively and connect with others!

Tools to aide creativity.

We have a multitude of carefully selected hardware and outboard to play with, Rupert Neve designed compression and eq, the illustrious Roland SRE-555, Eventide Harmoniser, legendary DBX 160's to name but a few not mention the wealth of UAD, Waves, SSL, Neve and other software emulations to glue any mix, from Avid To Zynaptic!
The signal path from instrument to microphone all delivered by Neutrik, Van Damme, Kelsey and Mogami through to Switchcraft and Mosses and Mitchell Patchbays to the superb sounding and much celebrated and much coveted Midas XL3, the audio journey continues with Universal Audio's now legendary A/D convertors to the DAW's, most commonly Logic, Pro Tools or UA Luna. We do accommodate other DAW's here just let us know your working preference.
We have many different ultra modern Microphones to compliment our growing vintage collection from Universal Audio Townsend Lab Sphere L22 to the 1960's favourite Reslo Ribbons, you can find a more detailed overview of our mic selections on the Equipment Page.
All the rooms are acoustically designed and treated, the control room sounds simply great.. sometimes luck is on side, when designing the main room, carefully offsetting walls really helped acoustically, this carried over into the control room, making for a relaxed and accurate space in which to mix your masterpiece. We use the awesome Yamaha NS10's alongside the stunning Dynaudio BM6a nearfields and BM15a's for "louder" reference mixing.

"I LOVE IT HERE MATT, GREAT TO SEE AND HEAR A PROPER MIXING DESK, LOVE THE LOCATION....THE RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES!"
